WAG Instructors must successfully complete an internal certification
process including
a hands-on apprenticeship before they are approved
to teach each level.
Instructors train a wide variety of breeds and compete
in many different organizations.
Some of our current and former instructors are AKC and/or UKC judges
Many have completed upper level titles and have placed at
National competitions.

Even
though I only own & show my labrador
retriever, I have given a number of private
lessons to many different breeds. I know that
each breed and dog is different and I teach
accordingly. My motto is: Whatever works best for

I handled the first
Gordon Setter ever to earn the UACH (she also earned an
NA). My other Gordon Setter earned almost all of his
UACH points but had to be retired because of a heart condition.
I believe that agility should
always be a positive experience for dogs. I also think
that more kids should become involved. This is a great
sport for kids too. I've taught the 4-H dog project in
my county for 12 years and am always surprised that more youth
don't get involved in agility outside of 4-H competition.

I encourage each dog and handler team to reach their potential. If you set high goals, you can achieve great things.
Ripley (female Irish Setter) and I competed at the AKC National Agility Championship twice. She was the top AKC agility Irish Setter in 1998.
Bryce (male Irish Setter) was the third Irish setter and first male Irish setter to earn a MACH title. It took him only 4 months from his first AG1 trial to complete his UACHX. We competed at the AKC Agility Nationals in 2005 and have qualified again for 2006. Bryce was the Top AKC agility Irish Setter for 2003 and 2004. |

I
have worked with slow and fast shelties and dealt with totally
different issues on courses. I also have experience with
rescue dogs (two of our shelties are rescues).
Agility
is a great way to develop a relationship with your dog and a
great way to build your dog’s confidence. It is about
the most fun you can have with your K-9 partner (although
playing with a tennis ball is a close second). |

The most important
training you can give your dog is confidence and exposure at a
very early age! I believe every dog has the ability to do many
things, we just need to open the doors for them. I like to
start young dogs and new handlers in UKC which offers more
opportunity to succeed. Other venues are more demanding and
should be a next step from UKC. Also, UKC offers non-AKC
registered breeds and mixed breeds the opportunity to compete. |

I really enjoy
agility and love the team aspect of the sport. I enjoy
teaching classes and privates and want the handler and dog to
enjoy themselves. I've trained 4 different labs and each
one has been different. There are many different types
dogs in my class and they all keep me on my toes!
There isn't just one way of doing something - what works for
me might not work for someone else and what works for them
might not work for me. Always be willing to try something -
my favorite phrase with my students is "humor me and try
this." |

Since starting
agility in 1995, I’ve learned and experimented with various
techniques from lots of classes, seminars and
experience. If I’ve learned anything, it’s there is
no one way to do anything. Everything depends on how you
and your dog work together and what you need as a unique team.
It’s to your advantage to build up a bag of handling
tricks that work for YOU. |
