Class Drop-Ins Policy
Posted: February 19, 2011    Trial Period: 2011 Session 2

WAG students who have been in a class within two sessions of the current session can now "drop in" on Level 2 or higher classes that are not full as of the last day of sign-up or later.

 Student/Dog Eligibility:

WAG Students who have been in a class within two sessions of the current session

Dogs may only attend a class level that they have previously attended or been approved for

NO special exceptions or "emergency evaluations" made for drop-in spots

"Approved for" means the dog is eligible for that level based on requirements in the class move up policy

The move up policy is posted on the website and at the building

If you are dropping into a level you haven't previously attended but are eligible for based on the class move-up policy, you must also include in your request a statement of why you are okay for that class based on the move up policy (e.g. have a Novice Standard leg, running in Excellent, etc.)

If there is any question of eligibility, the instructor of the class with the drop-in opening has final say in who is eligible for the spot.

 Classes Allowing Drop-Ins:

  Level 2 classes or higher

Classes NOT Full as of the last day of registration (or later for mid-session drop outs/pulls)

Drop-ins allowed up to the number of open spots

Drop-Ins NOT allowed for full classes with occasional absentees

Full classes continue with existing alternate policy

No Drop-Ins in Puppy, Foundation, Level 1 due to progressive nature of lessons

Openings will be announced by the class registrar on the WAG member and WAG student lists at the start of each session; for classes becoming available mid-session, the class instructor or registrar will announce the openings as soon as they become available

 Drop-In Sign Up:

DO NOT SHOW UP UNANNOUNCED - you must make pre-arrangements to ensure the spot is not already taken by another drop-in

Class Instructor(s) MUST be contacted to confirm an open spot for the desired class

For two-instructor classes, the designated contact person(s) will either be announced at the time that the opening is announced, or you can e-mail both instructors (email addresses are on the WAG website under the 'Members' menu)

In your email to the instructor, you must include the name of the dog who will be attending

Drop-in spots may be reserved up to one week ahead of time; requests should be made at least 24 hours in advance to give instructors a chance to see it since most work

If you don't hear back from the Instructor before class, then you don't get the drop-in spot

You may not transfer your drop-in spot to someone else without approval of the instructor

 Drop-In Class Cost:

Drop-in Class Cost:  Regular Class Cost + $2  (2011 Cost:  $15 WAG member, $17 nonmember)

The fee is payable to WAG at the time that the drop-in class is attended

Class credit (e.g. bitch in season credit, bad weather cancellation cards, or class credit cards) MAY be used as payment if accompanied by the additional $2 drop-in fee

Punched trial cards or member worker cards MAY be used as payment, but there will be NO refunds for extra punches or for using a card worth $18 to pay for a $15 or $17 class spot

 Drop-In Contacts:

You must Email the contact below to check and pre-register for any available drop-in spots.

We try to do this at least 90 minutes prior to class time but that is not always possible.

During severe weather, please call WAG at 815-675-9300 to check the message and also check your email before leaving for class.

If we are unable to meet the 90 minute deadline, every effort will be made to reach you at the contact number you have listed with the class registrar - please make sure that number is correct.

Foundation (Basic Skills)   Level 1 (Beginner)   Level 2 (Basic)   Level 3 (Intermediate)  Level 4 (Advanced)  Puppy

Foundation  - Fundamental Agility Skills (8 weeks)
Prerequisites:  Dogs entering this class should have completed the WAG puppy class, or have had prior experience in a group class environment. Because many of the exercises will be performed off leash and this class runs concurrently with the Puppy class, dogs should be well-socialized and well-behaved around other dogs.
Objectives: To teach a solid agility foundation to better prepare dogs for the Level 1 class, or to repair a faulty foundation for experienced dogs. This class emphasizes basic clicker skills, motivation, and introduction of skills needed to perform the basic agility equipment (tunnels, contacts, and weaves). The focus will be on building the solid 'bottom' behavior and confidence on moving equipment necessary for reliable independent contact performance, using channel weaves to lay the foundation for independent weaving skills, and building the confidence and drive necessary for success in future classes. Each skill is broken into steps through which dogs will progress at their own rate. Contact skills will be introduced using a practice board and will transition to low-height contact equipment as the dogs progress.

Level 1  - Beginner, Obstacle Performance (16 weeks)
Prerequisites: Dogs in this class must respond well to the commands sit, down, come and stay. Prior obedience training classes are recommended and/or Puppy Kindergarten or Foundation class. The dogs must be well-socialized and be able to work in a group environment.  Agility is a physically demanding sport, and the performance demands of some obstacles (such as bending in the weave poles, landing from jumps, banging the teeter at full height, and performing a steep aframe) may not be safe for dogs whose growth plates haven't closed. For the safety and long-term health of the dogs, all dogs entering the Level 1 class must be 10 months of age or older by the first night of class. Dogs under 10 months of age are encouraged to attend the Puppy or Foundation classes.
Objectives: Dogs and handlers will be introduced to all the agility equipment used in AKC agility trials. Emphasis will be placed on obstacle performance as well as on teaching the handlers the necessary training skills. At the end of the sixteen-week session, the dog should be able to complete the obstacles without fear or hesitation.
Note: This is a 16-week class broken into two 8-week sessions. Students may sign up for the first 8-week session and then choose if they wish to continue in the second 8 weeks. Progress is continous over the 16 weeks, so only dogs who have completed the first 8 weeks may sign up for the second 8 weeks. Training curriculum includes group exercises (handling moves on the flat and over a single jump) and then is split into three stations: 1) Contacts - emphasis is on 2on-2off contact behavior. Teeter is taught by teaching the bang/drop portion first with gradually increasing drop height, then using a table under the approach end of the teeter. Dogwalk is kept low for a significant portion of the class session to allow dogs to get comfortable with their footing at speed without risk of injury. A-frame height is gradually increased over the 16 weeks. Includes contact approaches from tunnel or jumps to encourage speed. 2) Weaves: the 2x2 weave method is taught, with transition to nearly closed channels for footwork once the dogs understand the weaving concept. Tire is also introduced in this station. 3) Tunnels/Jumps/Handling: Jumping is taught using Linda Mecklenburg's method of allowing the dog to offer the behavior and quickly progressing to full height jumps with emphasis on collected jumping. Jump work includes collection, recall to heel exercises, and extension work. Front crosses, rear crosses, and post turns/pulls will be taught and incorporated into short sequences that include a combination of collected and extended jumping. Chute, table, broad jump, double, and triple are introduced.

Level 2  - Basic Handling and Sequencing Skills (8 weeks)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of the WAG Level 1 class or approval of the Training Director. Dogs are expected to have a good working knowledge of the AKC obstacles and be able to complete each obstacle without fear or hesitation.
Objectives: Emphasis will be placed on improving both the dog’s and handler’s basic agility skills. This includes obstacle discrimination, front crosses, sending to obstacles from a distance, pinwheels and challenging weave pole entries. There will be opportunity to repeat short sequences multiple times and to work on specific problem areas.

  Level 3  - Intermediate/Competition (8 weeks)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of WAG Level 2 class and a qualifying leg from any agility organization, or have approval of the Training Director. Dogs should be actively competing in agility events in any venue. Dogs should be able to perform the weave poles with little intervention from the handler.
Objectives: This class will build on the basic skills learned in the Level 2 class. There will be more emphasis on longer obstacle sequences, incorporating a mixture of the basic agility course designs.  Handlers will be encouraged to try a variety of handling skills to determine what works best for their own dogs.

  Level 4  - Advanced (8 weeks)
Prerequisites: Completion of WAG Level 3 class or approval of the Training Director. Dogs must be showing at the equivalent of the AKC Excellent level or higher. Dogs must be able to perform the weave poles unassisted, with the handlers at a distance.
Objectives: This class is designed to improve teamwork.  Multiple obstacle sequences will be presented with challenges that require the dog and handler to function smoothly as a team. The obstacle sequences in this class will be more challenging and of greater length than the sequences in the Level 3 class. This class is fast-paced and requires a high degree of interest and motivation from both the dog and handler.

  Puppy Kindergarten  (8 weeks)
Puppy Prerequisites: 12 weeks – 6 months of age. Vaccinations are highly recommended as follows: under 16 weeks of age should have the second set of puppy shots; over 16 weeks of age must have rabies vaccination in addition to recommended puppy shots.
Come without your puppy the first night of class.
Puppy Objectives:  Come, Sit & Wiggle…puppies, that is!!!  We will emphasize socialization, puppy obedience and have an introduction to agility obstacles. We stress the use of lots of praise, lots of treats and lots of FUN!
